Compromising Position
I've been fascinated by cicadas (no, they are NOT locusts) for most of my life. As a kid, I would collect their shed skins to play with, and sometimes capture them when I climbed trees. I even had one "bite" me once. They have a proboscis that the pupae use to suck juices from tree roots. Though it's vestigial in the adult, they can still jab you!
This is the first time I've been fortunate enough to see one in the process of molting. You can see the wings still shriveled and damp at the edges. I snapped this pic and went to drop off the trash, and by the time I got back they were already stretched taut. In another 5-10 minutes it would have flown off, and I never would have seen it.

I go to school
LB is so eager for school! We're thinking of putting him in daycare one day a week so he can say he goes.

A bunch of us got together tonight for a little after-hours library party. It was a lot of fun.

Free-range Cub Scouts
BB's scoutmaster has a ranch north of town a ways. He invited the pack out for a picnic and hike. Halfway through the hike, he offered to take TS off of
Kim's chest. There he is on the left.

Naked Ladies
When I was a kid, my dad would always reach across the car and cover my eyes when we passed a a patch of these. "Don't look!" he'd say. "Naked ladies." Seeing these late-summer perennials always makes me think of going back to school, of new things opening before me, of limitless possibility. Yea, yea, let it be so.
